David Kaufman & Tom Segal— Interior Designer

“Each space is unique: the way light filters into a room can change the way the desired colors appear there. Our clients may know the color they want, but where we inevitably land must allow for the way our clients enter a room and move within it, ultimately informing where the doors and windows are placed. ”

—David Kaufman & Tom Segal, interior designer

Since teaming up in 1995, partners David Kaufman and Tom Segal have led their award-winning Chicago-based interior design firm with the enduring belief that avoiding fads — and instead focusing on being true to good design, artistry and craftsmanship — will always honor the design journey and inform the right design. Their eponymous firm has transformed some of the most amazing residences all over the country.

“As we dig deeper into a project and engage with the client’s lifestyle and esthetics, the project becomes much more organic in process.”

The team at Kaufman Segal Design is fueled by their approach to always have a project be finished, without being overdone or overly filled. Even in a project that has a great amount of art and artifact collections, the firm strives to present them in ways that give a viewer room to pause and rest, both visually and physically. Each project is exciting because they never know where the journey will lead them as there are so many critical dependencies.

Clients’ lifestyles and how they will use the space factor greatly into the final outcome, but the team also want its function well for them, visually appeal to them, excite them, and be a representation of their personality. “Our clients’ spaces should be a reflection of them — so it feels like their home right from the start.”
